Alain answers:

This is a nonrelativistic problem. The wavelength variation is a factor of 0.02/6000 = 3.333E-6, implying a velocity variation of 3.333E-6c or 1000 m/s. Assuming this is the RMS velocity, for a molar mass M of 0.023 kg it corresponds to a temperature T = M*(vRMS)^2/(3R) = 922.087 K.
I’m not saying the RMS velocity has to be the one implied by “in the range” but it’s the highest of the three velocities (RMS, mean, most-probable) that are easily calculated from the velocity distribution curve, which extends to quasi-infinite velocity. See the ref.

Wave Speed is the speed of light = 3.0 x 10^8 m/s (approximately)

Use velocity = frequency x wavelength, and assuming red light travels at 300,000,000 metres per second, (and knowing that 1 Angstrom =0.1 nm or 1 x 10^-10 m) the calculation is:

frequency = velocity / wavelength = 3 x 10^8 / 6000 x 10″-10 = 500,000,000,000,000 Hz

So the answer is (e) 500,000,000 MHz

Alain answers:

Well, listen carefully please, all of u my dear answerers.
Concerning depression ,there is not any drug known to be able to treat depression untill now.all these drugs u are talking about and all those drugs doctors and pharmaceutical companies are trying to convince people that it treats depression,I tell you that all these drugs are not treating depression at all.it just can help masking the manifestations of the disease.it only hides the symptoms but in fact the depressive condition stay in ur unconcious untill u stop taking the drug. So then it is just a symptomatic treatment…..like when some one has a serious disease ,and one of the symptoms of this disease is headache, and he went to take an analgesic. Of course the analgesic would releive the headache but still the original disease is there in his body and would continue give him headache when the effect of the analgesic drug reaches its end.
***THE PROBLEM WITH THESE DRUGS (ANTIDEPRESSANTS) IS THAT IT HAS AVERY SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS.INFACT ,THESE SIDE EFFECTS SHOULD THEMSELVES BE CONSIDERED AS A SERIOUS DISEASE.WHEN U CONTINUE TAKING THESE DRUGS FOR ALONG TIME YOU WOULD FIND THAT THESE DRUGS ARE REALLY AFFECTING UR BRAIN AND UR NERVOUS SYSTEM,BESIDES UR BODY GETS USED TO IT ,AND IT COULD LEAD YOU TO ADDICTION IF THE DOSE IS NOT WELL CONTROLLED BY THE DOC ,OR THE USER OF THE DRUG.
*THESE CNS DRUGS REALLY AFFECTS THE BRAIN AND ITS HARMFULL EFFECTS ARE MUCH WORSE THAN ITS USEFULL EFFECTS.THESE SIDE EFFECTS ARE MUCH WORSE THAN DEPRESSION ITSELF.ALTHOUGH WHAT THEY CONSIDER A USEFULL EFFECT FOR THEM IS NOT USEFULL AT ALL,COZ IT STILL DON’T TREAT DEPRESSION IT JUST MASKS IT BY GIVING A FALSE SENSATION OF RELAXATION AND JOY.BUT THROUGH OUGHT THE COURSE OF TREATMENT U WOULD FIND THAT FROM TIME TO TIME U STILL FEEL DEPRESSION FOR A WHILE THROUGH THE DAY OR FROM A DAY TO ANOTHER,ALTHOUGH U STILL TAKING THE MEDICATIONS(THE DRUGS).
*If you want my advice ,I will advise you to read the previous answer ,given by “sandra20″.it is really a good answer and of real help .Depression is not a physical disease,it is not ever related to the brain like what those money eating doctors and companies try to convince people with.they would prefere to gurantee ur visit to their clicics for the end of ur life coz this would guarantee their pockets and bank accounts to be always filled with ur money.yes, there is some chemical changes in the brain ,but these chemical changes in the brain happens normally to everyone while changing from a certain mood to another during daily life.in depression these chemical changes happens yes,but still it happens after the depression started not before it,this means depression is the cause of these changes not these chemical changes r the cause of depression.so then when we go to treat depression we shouldn’t treat it by giving drugs that affect these chemical transmitters(chemical changes) cause it is not the cause ,it is just a result of depression.we should start to deal with the cause not with the result.they should search to treat it from the point it started not from the point it ended.so that we have to start with the depressed man himself, his will, his thoughts, his beleifs that ended with him in that condition.
*so that guys I tell u all, treating depression is in ur hands not in any doctor’s hands, doctors really don’t know you better than u know urselves.they just study some theories and some chemistry which really is still not certain, just theories and they keep trying and testing them on everyone without being sure of any results.
*start by urself, help urself and don’t just wait for help of drugs.it is all about ur will and ur beleifs.start by asking urself questioins about when this has strated with u and how, to be able to find the point from where u can start finding ur way ,finding urself,ur will and finding the point where u can start trusting urself. Ask urself these questions without ever blaming urself,u don’t have to blame urself coz every one makes mistakes not only u,but everyone.don’t look at people and say they are better than u coz they don’t do the mistakes u could have done ,don’t do that coz the truth is that every body has his own mistakes and every body feels the sense of guilt some times ,the only difference between one and another is the way they deal with this sense of guilt, the way they deal with their mistakes.the only difference between someone who is depressed and other one who is not depressed is not that the non depressed not doing mistakes but is that the depressed blames himself deeply and punishes himself for his mistakes.please start by forgiving urself ,trust Allah’s/God’s forgiveness,he forgives everything. Sothen trust his forgiveness and start by asking him to guide u to what pleases him only so that u would be pleased.start by discussing everything with urself, between you and yourself without blaming urself in a hard way and without punishing urself mercilessly , it is not for u to punish urself ,it is only for Allah/God either to do this or not ,and Allah/God is all forgiver,he forgive everything so please beleive in his forgiveness and give urself the chance to taste the beautifull taste of his forgiveness and to live a beautifull mercifull life beneath his forgiveness and his mercy .beleive me when u beleive in Allah’s forgiveness and ask him forgiveness,u will find it easy inside you to forgive urself.just show some mercy to urself and don’t blame it or punish it that hard.
* remember that depression mainly means three main words…..sense of guilt ,sadness(greive, sorrow) and hoplesseness(or despair). These are the base of depression the main three components or elements.these three elements could be releived also by three main words…..forgiveness,satisfaction,and hope(free honest will, self confidense, reasonable and rational steps ).
*when you forgive urself u will never find any sense of guilt, and since u get rid of the guilt u will never find anysadness in ur heart (in Islam there is avery important wisdom (base) (hadith literature of “prophet Mohammed “peace be upon him)which indicates that the sin( the sense of guilt) turns all the body sad.all the body (all organs ,all systems ,and offcourse including the nervous system)gets sad for the sin,so then sadness always follow the sense of guilt after commiting sins.so that beleive me when Allah forgive you ,you will then be able to forgive urself and u will then get rid of the sense of guilt, and scince ur sin has been forgiven and the sense of guilt has fade away sothen sadness will leave ur body, according to the islamic teachings.when u get rid of sadness and find forgiveness and mercy you will then find satisfaction, and hope will easily follow and u will get rid of depression ,then u will find that u have restored (got back) ur life,ur normal social and satisfying life.
* components of hope are free honest will, resonable and rational steps in life as much as u can do,self confidence and righteous guidance(God’s guidance). No one can go on through life alone without Allah/God.
*try the islamic way of releiving depression ,beleieve me u will be recovered sooner than u could immagine.try everything that could help you away from those harmfull drugs.these drugs are really a very big dirty lie.
*try also these kinds of therapies ,it could be helpfull :
Time line therapy,Neuro Conditioning Dynamics,Power Human Energy,NLP (Neuro Language Programming). Make search for “DR.IBRAHIM ELFIKY”, he is really brilliant in these sciences.I have attended some lectures to him.he is accredited trainer from the American Memory institute in New York.I think he lives in Canada but he gives lictures all over the world.
*for me I recommend the Islamic way (method).I recommend it specially coz I have practised it myself with 2 of my best friends and it has given amazing results they themselves never had immagined that they could have gotten rid of depression that easy and that soon oneday without any drugs.one of my friends had ” bipolar disorder” = “bipolar depression” . The doctor prescribed a long list of medications to him.he started to take his medications hoping to get rid of Depression ,but it had taken along time without any satisfying result.although drugs improved his depressed mood to some extent but still he used to feel depression from time to time although still taking his drugs ,besides the side effects of the drugs were felt as an illness itself.during this time ,drugs helped him to start attending his lectures but still it was too hard to him specially with his disturbed memory from the depression and from the side effects of the drugs itself.he kept on this way another 2 years, despite taking his medications but still feeling depression from time to time ,beside the side effects of those drugs. I was really concerned with his condition untill Allah/God has guided me while reading the holy qura’n to understand some ayat(verses, parts) that really has given me avery good Idea about Depression ,its components and how to deal with it.it depends mainly on understanding one’s motives&redirecting it in the right direction to acheiving his goals to fell peace inside.it is all about faith, relegious practises ,prayers 5 times perday, regular physical excersise, increasing his knowlage.in the holy qura’n many parts talking about how to deal with greive, sadness, satisfaction, forgiveness, sense of guilt ,andrecovery from diseases by the holly quraan and by certaine natural drinks&herbs.some centers in the islamic countries help recovery psychiatric problems by the holly quraan & the natural herbs..
Just contact this center in “Yemen” they’ve treated depression without drugs, just natural herbs, honey&the holly qura’n.contact them via the internet or the phone.

Alain answers:

Depression and anxiety kind of depend on each other, and most that get anxiety disorders usually start out becoming depressed. There’s a a fear of having lost control and that you’re going crazy and will never be the same or something bad will happen and this produces the anxiety and even physical symptoms as your anxiety level peaks. Then when your have a panic attack, there’s a part of a your brain named the amalgdala that works as kind of a “anxiety meter.” that gets “reset,” and you and your brain thinks that your new level of anxiety is appropriate.

Basically the only way to “reset,” this meter is to change your way of thinking. There are numerous ways to do this, but what I’ve found for me is, that if I become involved in something that overshadows my interest in my anxiety, then it helps to get my mind of it and in turn changes the way I think. The brain does things on it’s own, but it’s also influences by what we do to, so we are still very much in control of our brains and how it affects our mind.

There’s plenty of things to do other than that though, limiting caffeine and stimulants, healthy diet, exercise, would be of benefit. Avoiding stressful people or situations. You can’t let the anxiety influence your actions to much, even though this can be quite a challenge at times. Try to substitute thoughts that you are going crazy or something bad will happen with thoughts of logic. How likely are those things to happen, really?

Things that make it worse are focusing on it too much, letting it influence your actions too much, or being in a stressful environment, stimulants, thinking it’s taking over. Medication can go either way and affects everyone differently.

All natural Anxiety/Social Anxiety medication?

Ok so I have General Anxiety Disorder and Social Anxiety.
My doctor prescribed be with Venlafaxine, it worked for about the first 2 weeks and then it stopped. I asked him to higher my dose, so he did. It made me get all wierd. My mood was like changing alot, I got all jumpy and if anything it was making my anxiety worse. So I decided to stop taking it for one day (yesterday) and today I was all dizzy and felt like I was going to throw up for like 5 hours. I have vowed never to use non-natural drugs again, because if this is what its REALLY doing to my body, its rather horrible. Its shit.
Anyways does anyone know any good natural social anxiety/general anxiety medication that works? It would be best if you could speak from personal experience!

Alain answers:

Venlafaxine (Effexor) is an anti-depressant. Normally it takes anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks for it to kick in. If you have anxiety everyday for months and months, drugs like these may work.

You can also take drugs in the benzodiazepine class. Drugs such as Diazepam (Valium) or Lorazepam (Ativan) or short acting drugs. They have a short half-life in relation to SNRI Anti-Depressants like Effexor. You only need to take them when you feel your anxiety coming on. And they last for about a day, with relatively less side effects than anti-depressants in general. They can be habit forming, but only if you take it every day at doses larger than recommended.

You can ask your doctor to try one of those anxiolytic drugs. Take them once, and if you don’t like the feeling, don’t try it.

As far as I know, I don’t really know “Natural” drugs that change your anxiety levels. What you can do is take therapy like CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) which changes your thinking patterns, or just see a psychologist or psychiatrist and talk to them about your anxiety.

With my anxiety, I take ativan whenever I feel like my anxiety is coming on. I have them in 1 mg form. I have them in both sub lingual form (Put under the tongue, absorbed into the body) and in pill form. I think the sub linguals are faster acting, although I’m not entirely sure.

Anxiety can be managed by drugs, therapy, or other coping mechanisms. If music relaxes you, listen to music. There are a variety of mechanisms. If you want or need to talk, my e-mail is on my profile. I have a long history dealing with anxiety and I will not hesitate to share anything I’ve learned with you.

You need to contact a psyciatrist in Korea, if that is where you live presently, and he/she will most likely prescribe you an antianxiety medication. You can also help yourself as well by learning deep breathing techniques and other methods to help calm yourself in situations in which you feel anxiety. Good luck and take care.

Alain answers:

KNOW WHAT TRIGGERS YOUR PANIC DISORDER IS RITICAL:

http://www.anxiety-panic-treatment.com/panic-disorder/

1. Recurrent Panic Attacks
A panic attack is a sudden and intense feeling of terror, fear or apprehension, without the presence of actual danger. The symptoms of a panic attack usually happen suddenly, peak within 10 minutes and then subside. However, some attacks may last longer or may occur in succession, making it difficult to determine when one attack ends and another begins.
Many people may experience a panic attack once, or even a few times during their lives. However, in order for a panic disorder diagnosis to be made, one must experience recurring panic attacks that are not caused by the effects of drugs, alcohol or another medical or psychological condition.

2. Persistent Worry About the Implications of Panic Attacks
Because panic attacks result in such intense physical sensations, it is not uncommon for some people to become convinced they are related to an undiagnosed and possibly life-threatening medical condition. This may mean trips to the nearest emergency room or doctor’s office and intensive testing to rule out physical disease. But, even when assured that these symptoms are not life-threatening, it may do little to put the sufferer’s mind at ease. The feelings experienced during panic attacks are so overwhelming and uncontrollable, sufferers can become convinced they are going to die, are going crazy or that some medical condition has gone undiagnosed.

3. Behavioral Changes
So frightening are the symptoms of panic disorder that you may develop behavioral changes in an effort to avoid having another panic attack. For example, this may include avoiding physical exertion because the associated breathlessness and increased heart rate mimic panic symptoms.
Agoraphobia is a common complication of panic disorder that includes an intense fear (panic response) of being in certain situations in which escape is difficult or potentially embarrassing, or where help is not readily available. Such situations may include leaving home alone, being home alone, traveling by car, train or bus, being in an elevator, being in a crowd, being in a large store or mall, being on a bridge or standing in a line.

4. Persistent Concern About Having Another Panic Attack
Because panic attacks associated with panic disorder occur suddenly and without a known cause, may people find themselves worrying about when and where the next attack will occur. The anticipation of the next attack may cause you to feel anxious and interfere with your ability to fully function in your everyday life.

Well i’ve had all of the above my whole life and i ended up spending time in a mental hospital because of it. I put a shotgun to my head but inside i couldnt go through with it. It is extremely difficult to handle all of that. Especially the depersonalization, i would lay in my bed awake and out of no where i would become paralyzed. I couldnt yell or move as a dark creature would come towards me. My body felt tingly and ichy where it grabbed my leg. This would only last a few minutes until i would snap out of it. I became extremely suicidal because i couldnt handle the extreme case of psychosis, anxiety, and depression. The best thing to do is see a doctor who knows what they are talking about. A simple prescription of an anti depressant and/ or anxiety medication can really turn your life around. My name is jason, this is my girlfriends account btw..

Get him to a pediatric neuropsychologist — someone who is not only familiar with child psychiatry but also **behavioral neurology.** Make sure his *limbic system*/temporal lobes are OK…Get a brain MRI and long-term EEG. Make absolutely sure he does not have an underlying seizure disorder *before* you write this off as psychiatric (anxiety/depression). The difference between a right and wrong diagnosis here, and the subsequent right or wrong medicine(s) has the potential to make –or break — his future.
I have been this way ever since I was little. My mum used to drop me off for ballet classes, and I’d be terrified I’d be left there forever. This is really taking control of my life, and I want to move away in the next few years for university, but I’m worried I might not be able to. Anxiety disorders can seriously affect your life- it’s got so bad with me that i’m afraid to go out of the house unless i’m with my parents. Yes the bus thing is nasty, i also get scared when it comes because i don’t always feel comfortable around the people on there. You need to try and take your mind off it, if you get scared than try and reassure yourself. All the best

anxiety and medication with children?

My daughter has been diagnosed with selective mutism which is anxiety disorder. In addition to not speaking she has anxiety all day long. She has such severe anxiety she gets nausea almost every night just from being put in bed. She will shake and cry because she is scared but can never say what she is scared of….just a general fear. We have tried everything but since she is not even sure why she is scared I’m not sure it can be fixed with just talking. She has seen a speech therapist for 6 months with little improvent in sppech but no improvement for her anxiety. I have the number to a phycotherapist and I plan on calling and making an appointment. At one time I was completely against giving her medication but now I’m starting to hope maybe they can give her something to help. She is 6 years old and her severe anxiety keeps her from functioning. She doesn’t eat well, sleep well, or hardly speak unless it is to me or her siblings.

Any advice or comments to anyone who has been through something similar with a child would be appriciated.

This may sound weird, but in a way shes lucky. People that suffer from anxiety and panic attacks are usually much older and are cursed with it for many years if not the rest of their lives. While shes young you have time to get through it and teacher her how to fight anxiety. I personally have delt with anxiety and coached people suffering from many anxiety related issues for 3years now. You need to right away get her into cognitive therapy!

Feel free to email me for further info.
No matter what any doctor says to you, never ever get her started on pills. Ive used every single medication for anxiety, they are all habit forming, they all have serious withdrawls, and they all don’t cure it. They mask it and she will still feel some anxiety. Cognitive therapy will work in reteaching her mind to ignore the anxiety and find a way around it tell its gone.

One of the hardest parts of helping someone with anxiety is having to deny them. The things that scare her are the things she will avoid, this will go from just avoiding, to prevent any kind of interaction with the subject, to ultimately shutting. You need to end it as soon as possible by keeping her exposed while still doing cognitive therapy.

These things can be genetic but its all fixable regardless. If she isn’t able to calm down via talking, than its because her anxiety has gone a step up. As much as it hurts you to see her this way, you have to continue to force her to live a normal life. She needs to understand and learn things are ok, all over again.

Sorry to hear of your panick attacks, I know from previous experience they are no fun. One of the best ways to conquer your panick attacks believe it or not, is to face it.. Face your fear. Go to college tomorrow.. And try not to think about having another one. That is one of the reasons they come on. If you go to your health food store and ask for a powder called inositol, you mix it in your o.j and it can help relax you.. There are other things too, make sure your taking enough B vitamins, taking your omega’s and your magnesium. Ask your Dr. About tryptophan, its available by prescription in higher doses, and you can ask at the health food store about it too, they may have one available there. You need to practice relaxation therapy. Try breathing from your abdomen. Make sure you focus on your breathing. If you feel an attack coming on, go with it.. Dont fight it, just let it ride out. Know that they don’t last long, and that it will get better. I have a really good book called “the anxiety and phobia work book” it is very helpful. If you want you can email me, go to my profile and its there. You are not alone.. There are many people who suffer from this. There are many herbal remedies.. But try relaxation therapy as well. Good Luck to you.. ! Also, remember that cognitive therapy works! You should seek councelling. It is a great way, they are trained all about panick attacks, and they can help you. Another thing, keep a journal and try to identify your triggers, remember back, what happened? Were you nervous about a certain class? Test? Who were you with? What time of day? Don’t dwell on it, but take note, so if it does happen again, you can have an idea of whats triggering them. P.S all of those things I recomended are vitamins, and not chemicals. You need minerals too.

Causing yourself pain will only escalate over time.

Lets look at and address the causes and conditions of your anxiety… And then learn to manage and lower your stress…

How to do that?

Learn to first close your eyes and take 3 deep slow breaths. Start emptying your mind.

Do this for 5 minutes to start. Work up to 2 times a day 20 minutes each time. For more info see below (website)

Panic attack?

So i have suffered from anxiety for about 2 years.
Alain answers:

What is it that you’re afraid of? Whatever it is attack it, until you do fear will have control of you. But when you have the courage to face the fear, you’ll find the fear quickly disappears. Courage always wins over fear.

There is no basis for 92% of the things we worry about. That’s from Earl Nigthingale’s Lead the Field. I don’t remember the break-down of the 92% but the biggest one was worrying about things that never happened. As Mark Twain said “I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.”

As far as getting of the medication, that’s a good idea because you don’t need it. You can beat this on your own. Use the power of your sub-conscious mind…it’s absolutely amazing. I suggest a book I recently read by Dr. Joseph Murhpy titled “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind”

the thing about it though is that you really have to believe that you can overcome your anxiety without medication. Henry Ford said “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.” He understood the amazing power of the mind. How else can you explain a man with a 5th grade education building the largest automobile company of all time? He truly believed he could and didn’t listen to all the morons who told him he couldn’t. He thought he could and he did. And so can you.
Good luck. Http://www.stoppanicattack.com

Yes you’ve had one 100% and its mega scary!
Symptoms.
1.Racing heart
2.Sweaty
3.weak and shaky
4.giddy
5.shortness of breath
6.Feeling scared
So you have had one it seems, but if it happens again try to stay calm and breath slowly! Another tip is to hold a paper bag over you nose and mouth, and breath in and out slowly and calmly this will make the heart beat slow down to a normal pace.

Alain answers:

Yawning is your body’s way of telling you to get my oxygen in your brain. So either your are 1: already hyperventilating a bit as the panic attack starts and your brain tells you to yawn. Then the panic attack goes full blown. Or 2: already in a full blown panic attack and rapid breathing. Your body is telling you to yawn to help slow down your breathing. The shallow quick breaths increases co2 and decreases o2 causing your blood to be more acidic. So i would say that when you start to feel panicky watch your breathing and take deep long breaths in w/ longer breaths out. Good luck!

Alain answers:

“angsty”?

Is that some new jargon for a paranoid teenager?

That’s because you somehow identify or put too much emphasis on how people perceive you. Many teenagers believe or think their self-worth and self-esteem is dependent upon something or someone outside themselves. They also have too many raging hormones that they don’t know how to constructively channel. It’s analogous to a band of young cavemen always on guard for prehistoric creatures.

Maybe you should focus on just being your own person and doing your own thing. You have to be friends or instantly liked by everyone, nor do you want to hang around just anyone.

And please realize it is a book that is contemporary, who’s author can be proved and all that is said verified by the research papers!!

Correspond that with the fact that Roman Emperor Constantine produced the bible and he was a pagan not god!!! He also organized Christianity into the Holly Roman Catholic Church!! Not in Israel or any of the countries of supposed origin but entirely Italian!!

Pfft, you’re never too old. There are people around who have been goth since it started, and they’re middle-aged now.

I’m 21 too- I still listen to metal. I still dye my hair. I still wear a leather coat and biker boots. I like all that stuff. As long as you’re not going out of your way to be mean to people who don’t have the same interests as you it shouldn’t matter how old you are. It’s the way you look after yourself and treat other people that shows how mature you are, not your taste in music.

Don’t worry about what other people think of you- anyone who cares that much isn’t worth spending time with or listening to.

Describe what you think a person with schizophrenia/ dementia experiences.?

It’s for an essay – like, i’m taking references from say, a luna lovegood-like character.
the schizophrenia/ dementia of the character was caused by psychological trauma (like, his fiance or family members were killed in a really horrible disaster.)
and before he turned ‘loopy’ he was a certified genius.

like, do u think he hears his inner conscience talking to him, blaming him for his loved ones’ deaths? personally, i would prefer if he is just sort of in his own world. He CANNOT have violent thoughts, not even about suicide.

i really am going to go with something more luna lovegood ish. It’s fine if he talks to people who aren’t there, but it’s a bit simple. Tell me what you think he thinks about, sees, or hears.

Would anyone care to review my personal statement?

I want to go to University in September (Anglia Ruskin to be specific, 240 points) and this is my personal statement! I want to do Psychology Bsc (hons). Soooo yeah, this is my first draft, please be as harsh as possible, i want to get it the best it can be! Thank you! x

——

My deep interest in psychological studies sprung from an early age, by reading a range of books, my main influence surprisingly geared towards entertainment. The book in question was “Tricks of the Mind”, authored by Derren Brown. I realise this may seem a bit silly, yet in this book he wrote about the study of the mind, how he took psychology at University and loved it. It also gave me an elemental understanding of basic human behaviour, attachments, rapport and even suggestibility. This whole area seemed like an exciting delve into understanding functions, knowing how we work and what secrets of daily life are revealed through the tangled jungle of the human mind. This has carried on fascinating me through to this day.

I believe my life experiences, even at this young age, make me an ideal candidate for a degree, and later on a career in psychology. My previous employment has taught me many skills not only for the course, yet also for life, Discipline, patience and punctuality just to name a few. I started work at the age of 15 in a restaurant and café area at Bewl Water Reservoir, This included working in many roles there, but mostly serving food and handling money at the front of house. This is around the time I started to gain an interest in psychology, I found observing customers behaviour fascinating! I began to read up on human behaviour on the internet in order to see patterns in the customers. My boss here was what you could call… Strict, she would usually manage to fire at least 1 person a fortnight. I managed to stay here for over a year under this management and I consider that a great achievement! My boss eventually got outbid on the lease to the restaurant so I decided to move on.

I now work at the supermarket, The Co-operative. I feel my range of employment has taught me many transferable skills to proudly bring into a university lifestyle. working in sociable jobs focused around people, makes me a perfect candidate to study such a people based course, as I have had so much practise dealing with differing situations in differing roles,

I very much enjoy getting involved in the schools activities and helping spread a good word. I found myself getting involved in speeches and really enjoyed it, something many have trouble with; I grew to love! I eventually decided to apply to become a prefect at Angley, in order to, not only help the inner school workings, but also the whole reputation around the wider community, which I feel is very important being based in such a rural area of Kent.

After my degree, I plan to stay on in full time education and progress to a masters degree, maybe to become a psychology teacher, or simply branch out into a more specific area of expertise, such as an occupational psychologist. The research aspect also looks very appealing, the ability to create world leading data and changing the way human-kind thinks is mindblowing! And with my commitment and passion to everything psychology, I think this is a real-life possibility.

Alain answers:

I would have to disagree with the above answerers. As somebody with a great interest in psychology myself, This was all learnt through my life experiences and personal study of books as a young child, other peoples experiences and behaviours along with my own; looking at how things have affected certain people and the significant patterns there, along with online research over more recent years. This is far more important than somebody just ‘wanting’ to do psychology because they think they’re clever and can do anything. As one of the other answerers seemed to suggest otherwise, I think it would be right for me to say that if you’re applying for a university place, they’re not expecting you to have high-level qualifications in your chosen subject, or you wouldn’t need to attend university, but to have a good base knowledge, ideally through your own research and previous experiences, as you appear to have. This would then set you up perfectly to learn the more academic aspects of psychology. That said, I think that your statement portrays you as an excellent candidate, who has used their own personal time over the years to build up a passion for that particular subject, rather than somebody who has 9 A’s and no real-life experiences to help them in their studies. If I could suggest any things to help though, they would be to focus less on previous employment (put these together, ideally in a section which also explains your academic achievements and skills, etc) but more on the behaviours you have observed and your own personal research. Focus more on how you enjoyed researching these peoples behaviours and always felt at ease communicating with all types of people, rather than using your employment alone as one of the main reasons you would be an ideal candidate. Put more emphasis on your earliest interest and the types of things you researched in your own time. More emphasis on your deep interest and passion too. Also, structure is important, so break it down into sections and put all of your sentences/points into relevant sections which go together best. These don’t have to be written in a common structural layout, but however it fits and looks best. I.e, Personal statement (Main short pointers as to why you want to study this subject) Employment/skills, etc (As it says, but you could use part of this to detail how your employment experiences have given you a good base knowledge and separate this slightly from your skills and academic achievement) And another section where you go deeper into your personal experiences, research, etc and goals for the future (Keep goals brief too). It’s also clear from your statement that you’re intelligent and can write fluently, which would also be an important factor in getting on any course.

So keep your original statement, just slightly reduce the previous employment section and increase details of your passion and the personal time spent on research/your interest, etc. I would also have to agree with the answerer who mentioned that some of it is long winded, especially about your boss losing the lease, etc. Stick to main points as much as you can.

Excellent for a first attempt though and not much to change. It’s your choice if you take the advice of course, but it’s always worth looking at. Good luck!

PS….To the person who said that the appearance of trying to impress someone would turn them off…By using uttermost honesty, as this statement would portray, isn’t using emphasis in order to impress the reader part of the point? Slightly similar to a CV? You wouldn’t just reel off all your worst points now, would you?

i dont feel those things anymore , the world to me has turned out to be disappointing in my experience – and ive achieved nothing i wanted so far .

i have to say that my life has turned out rather disappointingly so far . suffered injustices, adversity’s , made critical mistakes , squandered away years , been into prison 11 years back, have a long psychiatric history , behaved in a violent conduct years ago – and as such of all this, i have missed out on a NORMAL life . a life of ; – building relationships with people , being employed , getting qualifications and most other things – the things that matter.

dont get me wrong , my life hasn’t been as bad , compared to some people .

i have obviously survived up to now but its been very difficult to say the least –

the scenario now, more or less is :

ive lived alone for 6 years in a 1 bedrooom flat on disability, owning ‘ few ‘ material belongings – getting help for my difficult psychological problems , accept my diagnosis , hoping to get another test to see if i have anxiety disorders – which i suspect – i see a support worker weekly , which makes me feel like a RETARD because im a 32 year old adult – im hoping to get psychotherapy but have to do the support worker appointments first.

it has been pretty tough for me . – ive survived yes , only through inner strength – but ive achieved NOTHING i wanted to do – and got nothing i hoped for.

i feel insecure about my future , empty, lonely , and a sense of profound loss –

when i browse facebook and see all my old class mates that have done well, seemed to have lived average normal lives , most of them have had partners , have LIVED , travelled , have kids , are in work, enjoying their lives – one pretty blonde girl i remember ‘ louise ‘ – she had a crush on me in school ( back when i was cute and flawless ) – now lives in australia , has a good job -
i saw a picture of her with a big happy smile holding what looked like her little boy , she had sunglasses on and was standing on a sunny street that looked like ‘ ramsey street ‘ from the show ‘ neighbours ‘ – with a blue sky and fluffy clouds in the background.

i felt like crying , seeing reflected back at me the life i always wanted , hoped for , but never got .

a deep sense of loss and sadness engulfing me , in my dark , one bedroomed apartment.

the only things that keep me going are my ‘ remote ‘ dreams , the hope of attaining a good paying computer job, to build meaningful relationships then finally to move to a quiet coastal village near a seaside town somewhere.

but to me, those goals seem impossible.

Your life isn’t over. You’ve probably got a good 50 or more years to live. So, with that said, here are a couple of suggestions.

What you’re experiencing is a bit of depression and a sense of your own mortality. You’re going to get older, but you can also get smarter. Go to school. Get a trade. Find a way to accomplish the goals you set for yourself. If you think they are unattainable, then they are. However, if you push yourself, you’ll see that you can do it. How do I know? Because I went back to school when I was 36. I’m in my forties now and am working on getting a Ph.D. In clinical psychology. Why? Because I want to do it. I’m only going to get older, but I don’t have to whine about it. It’s taking me a while because school costs so much. However, if you’re on disability, you may be able to get some type of assistance for an education.

Reassess your goals. Set new ones. If you want to be something by the time you’re 35, work for it.
Understand that your life is not over and that you have many years ahead of you. Do it for yourself. And remember that there are people your age who have never been married as well. You’re not the only one.

Are the riots the result of evil in the world and we eventually reap what we sow?

There are socioeconomic reasons why society descends into chaos. There are cultural and environmental reasons also and last but not least there are psychological reasons on the part of the rioters for the reasons why they are doing it.
No doubt the talking heads will be trying to single out and define why this phenomenon has happened within our inner city communities and the young people who are clearly unafraid of the law and have no respect for their communities.
I would like to raise another issue and that is a spiritual one and a karmic one too.
It struck me as supreme irony that these youths were targeting premises that were outlets for the selling of mobile phones, trainers and sports wear, dvd’s cd’s,games and consoles, laptops and alcohol and no doubt cigarettes.
These things are all paramount in today’s youth culture of bling and gangs and money over bitches.
Society has sat back and allowed this all to develop in the name of freedom and progress in our consumerist materialist secular society based on the individual.
Yet mobile phones require a metallic component that is mined in Africa and the mining of this has devastated the countries environmentally, economically and socially were it can be found. It has been responsible for the rise of war lords and the money that is made is further used to promote evil.
Those trainers are manufactured in sweat shops in Asia for a fraction of the cost like the sports wear. The dvd’s cd’s and games that these youths enjoy have an element of violent criminality and they like to be listened to and viewed on the latest Plasma’s and sound systems. The alcohol problem has been encouraged by the ignorance of the Government pandering to the alcohol industry and this has all come home to roost.
We seen recently the Arab spring and the encouragement of the West for people to rise up and organize and this was all done by Twitter and Facebook and these young people maybe noneductaed delinquents nevertheless they posses skills at utilizing the technology to further their ends.
So what I am expressing is that evil flourishes and everything we do as a society in some way returns to us.
I feel just as sorry for Afghan children being killed in a raid by the forces of the USA/UK and then it being reduced from what is a war crime to collateral damage as I do for people being burnt out and there businesses destroyed here in the UK by the rioters.
Yet my conclusion is, as someone who tries to think universally as a spiritual person, that we are reaping what we sow because we refuse to look beyond our own needs and wants.

Psychiatric problems + loneliness is KILLING ME… what do I do?

I’ve been suffering from psychological problems for about 7 years now. From what I can gather from psychologists/psychiatrists, I’m dealing with some horrible mix of clinical depression, anxiety disorder, OCD, ADD, and mild psychosis. I actually spent three days in a psych ward last semester. Forget the cliche “I’m going insane…” I already am insane. That’s a given.

Women seem to avoid me like the plague. I’m decent looking, I’m a nice guy (not an arrogant asshole), I’m creative, humerous, and adventurous, and I’m in good shape. I work out, I do parkour (climb buildings), and practice Ninjitsu (i.e. I’m a ninja)… my friends actually tell me that I’m a “badass.”

The only girl I’ve ever kissed was so drunk she would’ve made out with anybody. It was a rather nice makeout session, but I’d much rather have a real girlfriend. I think that having a “taste” of what could be has actually made things worse. The funny thing is, now that I friended her on Facebook I’m repulsed by her (for example, she joined a group called “I Go To USC… And I Am Better Than You”)… but of course I asked her out anyway, and was rejected in that long, drawn-out way that sadistic girls like to do when they want you to think you might have a chance, and don’t have the stones to just reject you flat-out.

My best guess is that, despite my best efforts to act cool and “confident,” my inner “beaten dog” mentality shines through no matter what girl I talk to. Since girls seem to see “confidence” as a legitimate basis for attraction, that must be why I’ve been rejected the past dozen times I’ve asked a girl out on a date. Or maybe they can just sense the fact that I’m bats*** crazy, and steer clear of me in favor of more “normal” people (blech).

Either that or, there’s some kind of conspiracy or curse on me that prevents any woman from ever showing me affection. I’m actually starting to believe I might be in Hell. Perhaps I did something terrible in a previous life, and this world has been set in place to punish me. Now don’t think I’m some pansy whining “no one will date me, this is the end of the world “. No. I have to deal with shit that, unless you have ever had serious psychological problems, you could never imagine. It would be NICE to have a significant other giving me moral support while I fight this battle, but I’ve come to realize there’s no way that’s ever happening.

So I ask you, what is the cure for this loneliness? At one point I thought the solution was to somehow eliminate my sex drive, but I don’t really want to neuter myself, chemically or otherwise. Masturbation doesn’t help, of course… just makes me feel lonelier. I get plenty of exercise. I’m contemplating hiring some kind of prostitute, though it’d probably be best to go somewhere like Las Vegas where prostitution is legal. But I know that’s not going to solve the problem… I’m just hoping it would make it a little better. I’m turning 21 soon… maybe I should go to bars and hunt for “bar skanks” or something… uhhhm… yeah. Desperation brings us all to new lows, I’m sure. :

I don’t know. What am I supposed to do now?? :[

I’ve been to all those places you have gone. Professionals(i.e. Prostitutes) don’t work. You are looking for something real. No matter what your preconceived notions are you will KNOW with no doubts you have done the wrong thing after the deed is done. Trying to slake you thirst with a mirage doesn’t work. This will sound odd, but it worked for me. Try focusing on the world around you without thinking about yourself. The world is a big place, explore it. You can’t imaging the wonderful awe inspiring things you will find if you just look around. It is difficult at first. You have to just let that drive go. It won’t go away for good, so don’t worry about that. You figured out that you can’t kill it, so just let it sleep. There are many ways to get to that place. Meditation worked well for me. You might have to look to other things. As someone who has been where you are, you can do this. It takes effort, but when you get there its glorious. Best of luck on your journey.

Alain answers:

Yes you can. I scheduled an appointment with a psychiatrist and told him my symptoms. He stated he felt I had GAD and started me on medication. I had to go back every few weeks for a few months to make sure I was doing alright, but basically the doctor only asked about my anxiety- what causes it, how I feel when I have an attack and how the medication was working. I don’t think any of my appointments lasted longer than 15, maybe 20 minutes. And don’t be afraid to doctor shop. I saw two different doctors before I found one that actually listened and was very down to earth. I love him and am very happy I didn’t settle for a doctor who I did not feel comfortable with.

Your doctor will be able to choose what is best for you after he/she knows your symptoms or how you experience the anxiety. Work with your doctor as a team. I hope you will be feeling better soon.

I have general anxiety disorder and im on medication but im still stuggling with things, some adive plz?

Im 19 years old and i hav generalized anxiety disorder and i am be treated for it (medication and counseling). But even though im being treated im still having a very hard time controlling all of my anxious thoughts and its really frustrating for me. There is many things that i really can not control even with my medication. Before i took meds i struggled with: worrying constantly about simple things that dont matter, shakiness, asking “what if questions” to my myself in my head, and i always had i thing where i assume everyone doesnt like me or is mad in some way at me. However now that im treated i mostly struggle with what ifs and false assumptions. I feel like this is ruining my relationships with my friends and my family. I might have already ruined one of my important important friendships with a close friend. An example of the way i ct/think: If one of my co-workers walks in the door and i say hello, and they dont answer (maybe they didnt hear or are distracted) ill assume that their mad at me and ill worry about it, usually for a long period of time (sometimes the whole day). So if that happened and the person talked to me later id ignore them or be really depressed even though nothing would be wrong. That may sound silly but thats my reality and i honestly dont realize i do this until later in the day or days after. After that ill ask myself in my head about what if statements, such as; “what if he thinks im a weirdo” or ” what happens if he wont be my friend anymore” or “what if he ignores me because i made him mad”. I get these feelings and thoughts everyday and especially around my close friends. I told one of my close friends about my condition and she was fine and accepted me, but shortly after that we havent talked in a whole month (we used to talk all the time). Im wondering if because i told her it could hav affected our friendship and this kills me inside. Im afraid to tell others the whole story like i told her out of fear the same thing will happen, but i did let some others know i had a type of social problem. Is there anyway to deal or counter these thoughts i get? Is there something i can do or learn to help prevent these from reoccuring so often? Any advice would be great, like i said this is really hard for me to deal with and i really hate being like this. So any tips or thoughts????

Alain answers:

I totally understand your situation and believe me, its not rare.. I deal with anxiety myself. Im not a social type of person cause im always lost for words when someone is talking to me.. Its a long story but anyway, to answer your question, the problem we have in common is because we lack confidence.. I am really talkative around people im comfortable with like my brothers/sisters and my girlfriend but im a very boring guy when around other people even with friends.. That just proves that we lack confidence. Think of it as this, if you are going to talk with a 10 years old would you think that you are boring? No, because he is just 10 which makes you think that you have total dominance over the situation.. Same thing goes with everybody else, if you stop caring what people might think of you then things will only get better. Try analyzing this, the thing that makes people talk is basically the brain. Two people talking means 2 brain interacting. Our physical features are all a matter of solid substance to give us form. But its really the brain that lets us talk. Whenever you are reaching out to someone, think of them as a brain. You are no different with them. We are all the same.. We started from being just a tiny brain and growing up, we learn and absorb different information from one another which is what makes us different from one another, but at the end of the day, we are all the same… Its kinda hard to explain but i assume you are getting my point.. Just be yourself. Have confidence.. And think of everybody as one brain. They are no different from you.. Physical feature is only a disguise. =)

A more accurate answer may be obtained by submitting a survey to the kids in your school. Most fears/worries/whatever are pretty universal (and mostly in the person’s head.) Its how you deal with life that is the key, not avoiding the petty issues we all face at times.

The book “Heroes and Ghosts” was a wonderful story about two male characters falling in love. The plot was complex and interesting and full of angst, though culminating in a happy ending, thankfully. The only problem may be that the book contains graphic sexual scenes between the two main characters, so if you don’t approve of that, this book is definitely not one that I would recommend for you.
